In the high Cascades and Northern Washington State
Breaking camp at McDonald, south of Nakusp, on Lower Arrow Lake
(Columbia River), British Columbia, crossing into Okanagan valley and
eventually into the US, I turn sharply westard amidst orchards, and
the elevation rise changes the semi-desert to snowpacks and jagged mountains.
Before then: most beatuiful valleys and woods and old western towns
of Highway 20 -- just before the high wilderness of Cascade National
Park, nearly coastal Washington State.
Having made my camp for the night at Long Fir, a US Forest Service
campground, I am out and about savoring the available light and local
flora. The nearest westbound telephone turns out to be 47 miles away
at Ross Dam's El Diablo Reservoir boat shelter ...and I don't know how
to use it (turns out you have to dial 9 to get out). For now,
enjoying queen ann's lace, gorgeous scents, and a blazing sunset.
