(my daytime campfire and camp on Round Bear Island, MN near Ontario border, 1997)

DO NOT DO THIS!  Always build or use an existing fire circle made of stones or such, and keep it down!

Do not do this even if you happen to have plenty of water on hand, such as in that dromedary (center black object) and one another (blue) and can get water readily cuz you're camping on the edge of an easy-access island.

The airborne sparks of a vigorous fire of very dry wood are a potential runaway reaction. Depending on the dryness of the forest, you could have a network news event in moments. Besides, brilliant fires like this can make people even far away assume that you are in distress and trouble themselves on your account. Wouldn't you?

As I intended to, I did uneventfully hem in this fire with the spout of my water-heavy dromedary, making sure the fire did not leave the footprint I designed for it, and I obliterated the blackened site when leaving, rendering it unlikely to attract other firemasters :), much to the dislocated distress of a couple of ash-drawn froggies that found it homey. Not proud of my cityboy newbie mistake; even more concerned that a person could easily do it without living to tell about it. And so I'm tellin.

On Round Bear Island, Voyageur National Park, one of my 4 days there. Commuting to eat, and lazily bathing in the buff by a moss boulder in the low shadows and bird songs of early mornings all by my Arcadian/sylvan/Voyageur self. The bears were most graciously not crashing my ablutions, unlike my camp when I was gone. What life.
