		Carmen with a rose in her teeth
		sits on the bed -- crying
		her heavy earrings
		eavesdrop
		on her mouth

		Carmen props her chin on one hand
		stares
		over her eyes
		her thin eyelids
		dim and go out

		Carmen -- with the bent zag
		of her twin brow
		crosses off the night
		sails
		across the empty bed

		the whisper
		the constant whisper
		more silent
		than the knock of the heart
		shudders within her curls

		she drops the rose
		lies still
		within the open eyes
		dead earrings
		shine
