		Over Heloise
		------------------------------------------------------

		a leaf cast off from the sun
		by wind by wind
		trembling smileless in a dark gown
		she braided her fingers on the gate

		two hollows in blanched cheeks
		made by rain by rain
		she slept on them
		on bent gold arm
		hair fell
		on white face

		she whispered -- spooked bats
		she whispered -- drew moths
		with a plaint -- made a nest
		fit for a sloe-eyed pregnant mouse

		when the mouse mother -- with a squeak
		announced the birthday to the world
		she stood pressing imaginary fingers
		to a blind belly
		
		more silent than thought
